Hydrophilic Fumed Silica Grades Impact Silicone Oil Viscosity

Will different grades of Hydrophilic fumed silica affect the viscosity of silicone oil?

HIFULL fumed silica produces 7 grades of hydrophilic fumed silica, and they have different specific surface areas. Today we will see their effects on the viscosity of silicone oil.

Here are four samples of silicone oil: Add eight percent of HIFULL HL-150, HIFULL HL-200, HIFULL HL-300 and HIFULL HL-380 into silicone oil samples separately

  • Disperse each sample for five minutes by one thousand revolutions per minute in the high-speed disperser
  • Then increase to two thousand revolutions per minute for 10 minutes
  • Use Brookfield viscometer to measure after fully disperse
  • The results show that the higher specific surface area of hydrophilic fumed silica leads to a higher viscosity of silicone oil

Pyrohydrolysi & Trichloromethylsilane

Fumed silica is synthesized by the pyrohydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride or trichloromethylsilane in the flame of hydrogen and oxygen. Our main raw material is silicon tetrachloride, and the secondary is trichloromethylsilane.

When fumed silica is used as filler or additives, it helps in thickening, reinforcement, transparency, free-flow, thixotropic performance, dielectric properties, anti-settling, heat insulation, and anti-sagging. For example, for powder products, HIFULL fumed silica is used as an anti-caking agent; for liquid products, HIFULL fumed silica is used as an anti-settling agent or suspending agent.
