Effect of Fumed Silica on the Tensile Strength of Grout

Fumed silica is a nanomaterial characterized by an amorphous structure, high specific surface area, nanoscale particle diameter, high surface activity, electrical insulation, thermal stability, chemical inertness, and high purity. With a primary particle size ranging from 7 to 40 nm and a specific surface area of 30–450 m²/g, its surface is rich in silanol functional groups.

Through this unique physical and chemical structure, fumed silica forms a three-dimensional network in liquid systems via hydrogen bonding, imparting thickening, thixotropic, and reinforcing properties. Consequently, it is widely used as a functional additive in adhesives, coatings, and sealants.

Tensile Strength Evaluation in Epoxy Resin Grout

As a core material for filling tile joints in building decoration, grout performance directly determines service durability. Most commercial grouts utilize an epoxy resin or polyurea resin matrix. Although these systems exhibit good adhesion, improvements in mechanical strength and sag resistance remain necessary. HIFULL evaluated the tensile strength of epoxy resin grout by adding 0% and 6% fumed silica to the system to determine its impact on mechanical performance and analyze its mechanism of action.

Experimental Results: 0% vs. 6% Fumed Silica Loading

The evaluation used a blank sample without fumed silica as the control group and a sample with 6% fumed silica as the experimental group. Tensile strength testing was performed after curing under identical conditions.

The tensile strength of the blank sample was 2.62 MPa, whereas adding 6% fumed silica increased the tensile strength to 12.23 MPa—a 367% improvement. The data demonstrate that appropriate fumed silica addition significantly enhances the tensile properties of epoxy grout.

Three Reinforcement Mechanisms in Epoxy Resin Systems

The tensile strength improvement stems from three synergistic mechanisms:

Physical reinforcement of the three-dimensional network: The surface silanol groups on fumed silica form a continuous three-dimensional network via hydrogen bonding within the resin matrix. This network restricts polymer chain movement under static conditions, increasing rigidity and load-bearing capacity under tensile stress.

Interfacial bond enhancement: Fumed silica exhibits high surface activity and compatibility with epoxy resin, establishing strong interfacial adhesion. Under mechanical stress, loads transfer effectively to the nanoparticles, inducing plastic deformation in the surrounding matrix to absorb energy and increase overall strength.

Microstructural densification: Nanoscale fumed silica particles fill microscopic voids between polymer chains, reducing internal defects and stress concentration points to yield a denser microstructure.

Optimal Loading Ratios & Industrial Supply Capabilities

While a 6% addition level achieved significant reinforcement in this test, HIFULL technical evaluations indicate that fumed silica loading does not follow a linear trend. Tensile strength exhibits a parabolic relationship with addition levels: at lower concentrations, uniform nanoparticle dispersion builds an effective reinforcing network; at excessive concentrations, particle agglomeration introduces micro-voids, reducing tensile strength. Optimal loading ratios must therefore be determined experimentally for specific resin formulations.
