How Fumed Silica Improves Sag Resistance in Epoxy Adhesives
Effect of Hydrophobic Fumed Silica on the Anti-Sagging Performance of Epoxy Structural Adhesives for Steel Bonding
Epoxy structural adhesives are widely used for steel plate bonding in concrete reinforcement projects. Because these adhesives are frequently applied to vertical and overhead surfaces, sag resistance directly affects bond-line uniformity and the quality of the bonded joint. If the adhesive has insufficient yield stress, it can flow under its own weight during the open or resting period after application, resulting in an uneven or thinned adhesive layer, voids, and other bonding defects.
Fumed silica is commonly incorporated into epoxy structural adhesives as a rheology modifier to increase viscosity, improve thixotropy, and control sag.
To evaluate its performance in this application, HIFULL conducted vertical-panel tests comparing hydrophobic fumed silica HIFULL® HB-139B with four competing products and a blank sample without fumed silica. The test focused on anti-sagging performance in an epoxy structural adhesive system and the rheological mechanism responsible for the observed behavior.

As shown in Figure 1, each adhesive sample was applied uniformly to a vertical steel plate. After a specified resting period, the sag distance was measured against reference lines.
The blank sample without fumed silica showed a sag distance of more than 50 mm, accompanied by pronounced necking and continuous flow marks. These results indicate that the unmodified epoxy system had insufficient static viscosity and yield stress to resist gravitational flow under the test conditions.
By comparison, all five samples containing HIFULL® HB-139B or competing products 1–4 showed sag distances of less than 2 mm. The lower edges of the adhesive remained close to the reference line, with no visible continuous flow. Under the tested conditions, HB-139B therefore provided anti-sagging performance comparable to that of the four competing hydrophobic fumed silica products.

Rheological Mechanism of Hydrophobic Fumed Silica
The anti-sagging effect of hydrophobic fumed silica is associated with the particle network formed within the epoxy resin matrix. Fumed silica consists of nanoscale primary particles that form aggregates and larger agglomerated structures. Surface modification with hydrophobic groups changes the particle–particle and particle–resin interactions, allowing the silica to develop a reversible network within the organic resin system.
At rest, interactions among the dispersed silica structures create a three-dimensional network that increases low-shear viscosity and contributes to the adhesive’s yield stress. This network helps the applied adhesive resist gravitational deformation on vertical and overhead surfaces.
During extrusion or application, shear disrupts part of the network structure, reducing the apparent viscosity and allowing the adhesive to flow through dispensing equipment and spread across the bonding surface. Once the applied shear is removed, the silica network gradually rebuilds and the viscosity recovers. Sufficient, rapid structural recovery allows the adhesive to stay in position after application and limits sag before curing.
This shear-dependent behavior is the basis of the thixotropic performance required in epoxy structural adhesives: lower apparent viscosity during application and higher resistance to flow after application.
HIFULL hydrophobic fumed silica, produced by chemically post-treating hydrophilic grades with silane agents (including HMDS, PDMS, DDS, and Special Silane), delivers water repellency, enhanced rheology control, and thickening performance. Available in multiple grades, it is ideally suited for RTV and HTV silicone rubber systems, adhesives & sealants, defoamers, cable compounds & gels, toner, and plant protection formulations.
Anti-Sagging Performance Must Be Balanced with Adhesive Properties
Sag control is one requirement for epoxy structural adhesives used in building reinforcement. The rheology modifier must also be compatible with the overall formulation and should not adversely affect properties such as bond strength or resistance to hot-humid aging.
Fumed silica performance therefore cannot be evaluated solely by maximum thickening efficiency. Dispersion behavior, thixotropic response, viscosity recovery, additive loading, and compatibility with the epoxy resin and curing system all influence the processing and final performance of the adhesive.

Application in Steel-Bonding Structural Adhesives
The vertical-panel comparison demonstrates the effect of hydrophobic fumed silica on the static stability of an epoxy structural adhesive. Under the tested conditions, the blank formulation showed more than 50 mm of sag, while formulations containing HIFULL® HB-139B and competing products 1–4 each showed less than 2 mm of sag.
For steel plate bonding and related reinforcement applications, this level of rheological control can help maintain a more consistent adhesive layer on vertical and overhead substrates during application and before curing. Selection of the appropriate fumed silica grade and dosage should be made together with the epoxy resin system, curing agent, filler package, mixing process, required application viscosity, bond-strength requirements, and environmental durability specifications.
