HIFULL® Fumed Silica: A Thickening Agent with Multifunctional Properties

Thickeners influence the rheological properties of systems in coatings, adhesives, and fine chemicals, affecting the ease of application, storage stability, sag resistance, and final film quality. Commonly used thickeners on the market include bentonite, cellulose ethers, polyamide waxes, swelling acrylates (of the alkali-swellable type), associative polyurethanes, and organic waxes.

Advantages and Limitations of Traditional Thickeners

Bentonite

As a natural inorganic thickener, it is low-cost and widely available, commonly used in water-based systems to provide basic thickening effects. However, its thickening efficiency is relatively low, requiring large amounts to achieve desired results, and it can easily affect transparency and glossiness. These drawbacks are particularly evident in high-end coatings and transparent adhesives.

Cellulose Ether (such as HEC, HPMC)

This type of water-soluble polymer offers high thickening efficiency and good water retention. However, their water resistance and alkali resistance are poor; they tend to degrade under humid conditions, resulting in a reduction in viscosity. Additionally, they are susceptible to microbial attack, necessitating preservatives, which increases formulation complexity.

Polyamide Wax

Polyamide wax provides thickening through forming a three-dimensional network structure, especially suitable for preventing pigment settling. However, its thickening effectiveness is significantly influenced by temperature, as the network structure may break down at elevated temperatures, leading to substantial viscosity loss. Moreover, polyamide wax is sensitive to polarity and chemical composition, limiting its applicability.

Swelling Acrylic (ASE/HASE)

Swelling acrylic thickeners, such as Alkali-Swellable Acrylic (ASE) and Hydrophobic-modified Alkali-Swellable Acrylic (HASE), offer high thickening efficiency and good leveling properties. However, they are highly pH-sensitive and generally require alkaline conditions to function effectively, restricting their use in non-alkaline systems.

Associative Polyurethane (HEUR)

Associative polyurethane (HEUR) is a class of high-performance thickener providing excellent leveling, anti-splatter, water resistance, and scrubbing resistance. Nevertheless, it is expensive and sensitive to surfactants and solvents, requiring careful balancing of various components during formulation design.

Organic Waxes (such as PE wax, PTFE wax)

Organic waxes like polyethylene wax or polytetrafluoroethylene wax deliver special thixotropy and surface effects, yet they suffer from high temperature sensitivity and potential impacts on product transparency.

In contrast, fumed silica is an amorphous nano-sized silicon dioxide synthesized via high-temperature vapor-phase hydrolysis, with primary particle sizes ranging from only 7–40 nm and specific surface areas up to 30-450 m²/g. It is precisely this ultrafine particle size and highly dispersible surface hydroxyl group structure that allows rapid formation of a three-dimensional spatial network within liquid systems through hydrogen bonding, endowing the system with exceptional thixotropy and structural viscosity.

Core Advantages of HIFULL® Fumed Silica

Outstanding Thixotropy: HIFULL® Fumed silica can significantly enhance the yield value of a system even at very low addition levels (typically 0.5%–3%), achieving ideal rheological behavior characterized by “thickening when static, thinning upon shear,” thereby effectively preventing pigment settling and sagging during coating application.

Broad Media Compatibility: Whether in polar solvents (such as alcohols, ketones), nonpolar systems (like aromatic, aliphatic hydrocarbons), or water-based, UV-curable systems, proper selection of hydrophilic or hydrophobic modified grades ensures excellent dispersion and thickening.

High Transparency Without Impairing Appearance: Being nano-scale particles, they do not scatter visible light, thus enabling usage in varnishes and transparent adhesives without compromising clarity or causing turbidity.

Multifunctionality: In addition to thickening, it strengthens mechanical properties, improves thermal stability, enhances anti-settling characteristics, and prevents cracking, making it a quintessential “functional additive.”

Environmentally Friendly & Safe: Non-toxic, odorless, chemically inert, compliant with environmental regulations such as RoHS and REACH, suitable for demanding fields like food packaging and medical devices.

However, similar to other thickeners, fumed silica also presents certain challenges, such as difficulties encountered during practical dispersion processes or a lack of adequate dispersing equipment.

Fomed silica differs from the traditional thickener model of “sacrificing other functions to improve thickening performance,” offering an integrated solution encompassing rheology control, stability, and versatility. In emerging fields such as new energy battery adhesives, high-end automotive coatings, and electronic packaging materials, HIFULL® fumed silica has become a key technological support for ensuring product quality and process reliability.

Although different thickeners each have distinct application scenarios, HIFULL® fumed silica, with its distinctive advantages, is redefining the standard for “efficient thickening.” It stands not only as a technical preference but also as a vital component within future green, smart, sustainable manufacturing ecosystems.
